Case Study | Mental Health Impact of an In-flight Medical Emergency

Case Study | Mental Health Impact of an In-flight Medical Emergency
5:12

In recent years, the aviation industry has experienced a rise in incidents of severe turbulence, presenting significant challenges to both passenger safety and crew well-being. At the same time, there is an increasing recognition of the mental health impacts associated with high-stress environments, such as those faced by aviation professionals. This growing awareness highlights the necessity for comprehensive support systems that cater to both immediate medical needs and long-term mental health resilience.

THE CASE

During the last moments of a flight between Teterboro and Oranjestad, Aruba, the aircraft unexpectedly encountered severe turbulence, impacting the 10 passengers, two pilots, and two cabin attendants. The turbulence caused significant injuries: one cabin attendant suffered a head injury, a passenger sustained a severe burn, and another passenger incurred a laceration after being knocked to the floor.

The uninjured cabin attendant quickly assumed responsibility, drawing on her MedAire training and using the Advanced Aviation Medical Kit to stabilise the injured. She coordinated with MedLink doctors, who provided real-time medical guidance, ensuring the injured received appropriate care during the flight.

The aircraft was close enough to its destination to avoid diversion, allowing MedAire to arrange for emergency medical services to be ready upon arrival at the airport.

After the injuries had been seen by doctors at the nearest medical facility, the passengers and crew members were quickly treated and released.

Despite the effective handling of the situation, the psychological impact was significant. The cabin attendant who managed the crisis was left with trauma and anxiety about future flights and potentially being triggered by even minor turbulence.

CHALLENGES

  • Immediate Emergency Support for Injured: Ensuring rapid and effective medical assistance to stabilise the injured passengers and crew during the flight.
  • Coordination of Medical Care at the Destination: Arranging seamless medical care upon arrival, ensuring all injured parties received timely treatment and, due to the nature of their injuries, were released the same day.

  • Post-Incident Recovery: The group decided to remain at the destination for the trip, allowing time for physical and emotional recovery before the scheduled return flight.
  • Crew Mental Health Management: Addressing the lasting trauma and anxiety experienced by the uninjured cabin attendant, who was concerned about her next flight.

MEDAIRE'S SUPPORT

MedAire360 offers a comprehensive support system immediately following an incident. MedLink's real-time medical guidance enabled the crew to deliver effective first aid and stabilise the injured passengers, ensuring immediate medical needs were met efficiently.

The Advanced Aviation Medical Kit was crucial in managing the burn and wound sustained during the turbulence. The cabin attendant's training in the Management of In-flight Illness and Injury ensured she was prepared to handle the situation effectively.

The flight department had also added MedAire's Wellbeing Services powered by Talk to a Peer, which offered crucial emotional support. Crew members were connected with trained Peer Support Volunteers (PSVs), current or former aviation professionals equipped to provide empathetic and relevant support. This peer-to-peer connection allowed crew members to openly discuss their experiences and emotions, fostering a safe space for healing and resilience-building.

SUCCESSFUL OPERATION

The crew effectively managed the aftermath of the turbulence incident. The combination of MedLink's medical expertise and the Wellbeing Services powered by Talk to a Peer provided the crew with the tools and reassurance needed to overcome their mental health challenges. The peer-to-peer connection offered emotional support, allowing crew members to address their concerns in a safe environment.

The crew felt comfortable discussing their experiences with each other after having conversations with Peer Support Volunteers, which provided reassurance and understanding. This peer support network proved invaluable in helping the crew process the incident, manage their anxiety, and regain confidence.

The shared experience of reaching out to peer support fostered a sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding, strengthening the team's resilience and cohesion. The case demonstrates the critical role of peer support and MedAire's comprehensive services in ensuring a flight department’s well-being and operational effectiveness.

By adding this Peer Support solution for your flight department, organisations can enhance the mental well-being of their crew, ensuring they are equipped to handle the emotional aftermath of in-flight emergencies. Peer support not only aids in immediate recovery but also builds a supportive community that promotes long-term resilience and operational effectiveness.
