Ship Captain’s Medical Guide: 24th Edition

The latest edition of the Ship Captain’s Medical Guide (SCMG) has just been released.

A few changes from previous editions include: 

• Revised Spinal Immobilisation Section

Updated guidelines for handling spinal injuries, detailing direction of use for a scoop stretcher. If you are thinking about purchasing a scoop stretcher, you should consider the following:

Connection Points: Pay special attention to the connection points where the two halves of the stretcher hook together, as these areas are prone to corrosion. Also, check where the scoop slides into the body for sizing.

Anti-Corrosion Care: When applying anti-corrosion spray, avoid using grease, as sand can get into the locking parts and jam them. Additionally, dissimilar metal electrolysis can occur when used around water. Thoroughly wash and dry the scoop before applying lubricant and storing it.
