SKIN CONDITIONS ONBOARD YACHTS

Working on a yacht can also expose you to many different types of skin conditions that can be painful and uncomfortable. At MedAire we advise on everything from warts to rashes, ingrown hairs and more.

To ensure you minimise the risk of developing any skin problems, that may affect your work and overall health, we've compiled our top six tips that can help prevent skin conditions while working onboard superyachts.

1. Wear Protective Clothing

Crew members out in the sun all day have high risks of developing skin problems, through prolonged sun exposure. To avoid getting sunburned, it's essential to wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, hats, and sunglasses. If you're going to spend a lot of time outdoors, consider wearing clothing that's designed to provide sun protection. Pay particular attention to the back of the neck.

2. Use Sunscreen

In addition to protective clothing, using sunscreen is another crucial step in preventing skin problems. Be sure to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on all exposed areas of your skin, at least 30 minutes before exposure to the sun. Reapply every two hours or more often if you are swimming or sweating.

In our medical kits, our sunscreen is combined with jellyfish protection, which is especially useful for children’s skin – as their skin is more susceptible to UV damage and more severe reactions to jelly fish stings.

3. Use a silicone-based barrier cream (in cold weather)

Prolonged skin exposure in cold weather can cause cracking and drying of the skin around the nail bed can create a very painful condition that can be prevented by using a non-greasy silicone-based barrier cream, which can also provide some protection from the cold.

4. Practice Good Hygiene

Maintaining good hygiene is essential in preventing skin problems such as athlete's foot and warts. Wash your feet regularly, dry them thoroughly, and wear clean socks to prevent athlete's foot. Also, avoid sharing personal items such as towels, razors, and nail clippers to prevent the spread of warts.

5. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial in preventing dry skin, which can be uncomfortable and prone to cracking. Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day and consider using a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

6. Seek Medical Attention Early

If you notice any unusual changes in your skin, such as moles that have changed in size, shape, or colour, seek medical attention immediately and if you have access to MedAire - make sure to contact us. Early intervention is crucial in preventing skin problems from worsening, and timely treatment can prevent serious health problems in the future.

AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF YOUR OVERALL HEALTH

Preventing skin conditions while working onboard a superyacht requires a combination of protective clothing, sunscreen, good hygiene, hydration, and early medical attention and by following these tips, you can give yourself the best opportunity to stay healthy and comfortable onboard the yacht.
