STCW'10: THE GOLD STANDARD IN MARITIME SAFETY
The STCW’10 (Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) is a set of global training standards, required for crew working onboard superyachts, ships, ferries and cruises.
The STCW’10 Basic Safety Training course is the legal minimum requirement for superyacht crew and ensures that everyone around the world, maintains the same high standards across a variety of disciplines, relating to maritime safety.
Recognised by all major crew placement agencies, the STCW’10 certification is the first step for those looking to start a career within the superyacht industry and whilst the certification is applicable only to commercial vessels (i.e. charters) over 24 meters – most private owners will request the certification too.
WHAT COURSES MAKE UP THE STCW'10 BASIC SAFETY QUALIFICATION?
The course comprises of the five following courses, which can be taken separately, or together – typically over the course of five days:
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Use of life jackets, inflatable life rafts and personal survival skills
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (A-VI/1-2)
- How to extinguish fires and how to use breathing apparatus
- Elementary First Aid (A-VI/1-3)
- Basic first aid and lifesaving skills (find out more here)
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (A-VI/1-4)
- Helps familiarise students with seafarer working conditions
- Proficiency in Security Awareness (A-V1/6)
- Added in 2010, the most recent update of STCW’10 looks at the ISPS code and how to recognise and combat a security threat at sea
WHERE CAN I GET THE STCW’10 QUALIFICATION?
For those looking to complete their STCW’10 certification, MedAire work closely with Warsash Maritime School in Southampton and we recommend their
STCW Basic Safety Training Week course, which covers all of the five courses mentioned above.
HOW DO I UPSKILL AND KEEP MY KNOWLEDGE UP TO DATE?
Crew members looking to take the next steps in their career, will need to increase their level of medical knowledge. Further STCW medical classes, such as Proficiency in Medical First Aid and Proficiency in Medical Care onboard are required to advance to OOW and Chief Mate positions.

MedAire also strongly recommend regular tune-up training in between the mandatory, regulatory certifications – with some estimates suggesting that up to 60% of learned safety knowledge is lost six months after a course.
Tune up training can be done onboard, in group sizes of up to 12 people.
